Financial Overview
At ONE Fertility, we understand that your fertility journey is unique not just medically, but also financially. Resources provided below are aimed at helping you make the best financial decisions for your individual circumstances. We encourage you to refer to the federal, provincial and other relevant websites to access most current information about the programs referred below. With regards to tax deductions and tax credits, it is important that you refer to the latest guidelines issued by the CRA or consult with a tax professional.
What’s Covered by OHIP?
In Ontario, many of the first steps in your fertility journey are covered through OHIP, including:
- Initial consultation with a fertility specialist
- Many diagnostic tests
- Certain ultrasound and bloodwork assessments
This ensures that understanding your fertility health — and identifying the right treatment plan — is accessible without a large financial burden.
Ontario Fertility Program (OFP)
We are pleased to offer services through the Ontario Fertility Program, which provides partial coverage for eligible Ontario residents seeking fertility treatment. The program covers some of the costs of both intrauterine insemination treatment (IUI) and in vitro fertilization treatment (IVF)
To qualify for OFP funding, patients must:
- Be an Ontario resident with a valid OHIP card
- Be under 43 years of age at the start of an IVF treatment cycle. There is no age limit for IUI services and an individual may have more than one funded IUI cycle
- Have not received a previously funded IVF cycle, as only one funded IVF cycle is permitted per lifetime
- The program is inclusive and available to individuals of all sexes, gender identities, sexual orientations, and family structure.
Eligible patients may receive funding toward the cost of:
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle
- In vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle
- Embryo freezing, thawing, and culture
- Fertility preservation for an approved medical indication.
Fertilization and embryology services may include the following services if appropriate:
- Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- Blastocyst culture
- One attempt at surgical sperm retrieval when medically required and performed during the funded IVF cycle
- Assisted hatching
- Some diagnostic services
What the OFP Does Not Cover
In addition to administrative fees, there are other services not covered by funding.
The following are some of the costs that are not included under OFP funding:
- Medication costs related to any funded treatment cycle
- Purchase of donor sperm or donor eggs
- Storage fees for eggs, sperm, or embryos
- Shipping fees for eggs, sperm or embryos
- Preimplantation genetic testing
- Services performed for other individuals involved in a funded IVF cycle (e.g., donors or surrogates) if they do not hold a valid Ontario health card
Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit (Effective January 2025)
Beginning January 2025, Ontario residents may claim a refundable tax credit of up to $5,000 per year, representing 25% of eligible fertility-related expenses.
Example:
If you spend $20,000 on privately funded IVF, you may receive a $5,000 refund.
Eligible expenses may include:
- IVF, ICSI, IUI and other ART procedures
- Fertility medications with a Drug Identification Number (DIN)
- Clinical fees and laboratory testing not covered by OHIP
- Egg, sperm, or embryo storage
- Donor eggs or sperm
- Surrogacy-related expenses within Canada
- Travel costs over 40 km for treatment
- Required supplies (e.g., syringes for prescribed medications)

Ineligible expenses include:
- Over-the-counter medications
- Massage or acupuncture unless prescribed

Canada’s Federal Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC)
Expenses such as fertility treatment costs, prescription medications, and travel for medical services incurred over and above a certain threshold during fertility treatments qualify as a deductible expense under your income tax return. Please check with a tax professional or refer to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website for more details.
Tips for tax time:
- Keep every receipt in one folder so nothing is missed
- Familiarize yourself with CRA guidelines
- Consider consulting a tax professional
- Be prepared for possible CRA review of your claim

Employer Benefits
Many group health benefit plans offered by Canadian employers include coverage for fertility treatments and related expenses. If you are covered by an employee health benefits plan, review your plan to see whether fertility treatments and/or medications used during treatment are covered. It is important to check the plan details carefully, or speak directly with your benefits provider to understand your specific coverage.
